Yangtze River Map

In the Qinhai Province is a magnificent mountain range known as the Tanggula Mountains.  Running through the mountains with some of the most stunning scenery in the world is the Yangtze River, the largest in all of China and the third largest on the planet.  Stretching more than 3,900 miles, China locals fondly call the river Chang Chiang, which translates to “Long River”!

East King CruiseThe Yangtze River was so named after Yang’s ancient Fiefdom and while it has a long existence, today taking a cruise down the Yangtze is truly an exciting adventure.  As the vessel sails, you will have the opportunity to see all the beauty, history, and culture of which the river is comprised.  Interestingly, this particular river has been a vital part of life for the Chinese people and today, the waters continue to support life in numerous ways.

Throughout China are a number of viable rivers but the Yangtze River is by far the most critical.  For one thing, its power is captured and transformed into generated energy at the Three Gorges Dam.  As a result, a large portion of energy in China is produced.  This dam creates hydropower but it also reduces Greenhouse effects by cutting down on gas emissions, decreases risk of flooding downstream cities, and helps navigate the flow of the river.  In fact, experts agree that the amount of power the Three Gorges Dam generates is enough to keep 15 nuclear plants in operation.

However, for people planning a vacation to China, taking a cruise on the Yangtze River offers something special, a means of getting up close to the heart of Asia.  As the river winds its way through the 3 gorges to include the Wuxia Gorge, Xiling Gorge, and the Outang Gorge, you are treated to breathtaking views of lush greenery, stiff peaks, strange rock formations, unique caves, and amazing wildlife native to China.

The beauty all along the Yangtze River is dramatic and tucked away in old villages and historical sites are cultural treasures that make a cruise such as this an unbelievable experience.  The cruise companies offer a wonderful selection of shore excursions while allowing you to stay in luxurious accommodations onboard a beautiful vessel designed with all the comforts of home.

Interestingly, 25% of China’s cargo being transported by ocean comes into the Yangtze River between the sea and Shanghai, and this band of water provides a means of navigation for people that live high in the mountains.  By taking a cruise, you too get to see first-hand how valuable the river is, even if sailing for fun.  No matter the budget or accommodations needed, you will find a number of reputable cruise companies that can provide everything for the perfect trip.
